Public art has been a staple of civilization since its dawn. Our second
issue is a celebration of some of the powerful voices and performers
who have brought their art within a hand’s reach of their audience.

For over a decade, Julian Beever has worked throughout Europe, the U.S.
and Australia, creating astounding anamorphic illustrations on pavement
intentionally distorted to create an impression of three-dimensionality.

Our second Area13 will highlight the top underground websites hosted
by the most notorious graffiti artists and their ilk.
• Blank
Canvas
Where government funding is going, and where its not: Blank Canvas makes
a critical analysis of the current state of thearts and humanities departments
in our nation’s public school system.

The Naked Cowboy
Strutting his stuff in the midst of Times Square wearing nothing but
a pair of painted underwear, boots and a cowboy hat, the Naked Cowboy
serenades crowds with folksy ballads in hopes of becoming “the
most celebrated entertainer of all time.”
• Discarded
Narratives:
The Linoleum Masterpieces of Bill Miller
Inspiration can come in unexpected forms; for Bill Miller, inspiration
has been found in the bits and pieces of discarded linoleum floor tiles
(preferably circa 1960s) which he collages together to create
large-scale portraits and landscapes.
• Finding
a Voice:The Rise of The Nuyorican
Cofounded by Miguel Algarin and Miguel Piñero in 1973, the Nuyorican
Poets Cafe has emerged as one of the country's most highly respected
arts organizations and has become an acclaimed forum for innovative
poetry,music, hip hop, video, visual arts, comedy and theatre.
• Hijo
Del Barrio: James De La Vega
De La Vega is perhaps the most famous of East Harlem’s muralists
and street artists. His gallery is the streets and brick walls of New
York City; his audience is every pedestrian seeking inspiration. Although
el barrio around his 104th Street gallery showcases literally dozens
of his culturally-influenced and religious-themed murals, he is best
known by many for his social commentaries poetically scribbled on the
streets of downtown.
• Immortal
Technique
Independent rap artist Immortal Technique arrived in the United States
in the early 1980s while civil war was just breaking out in his native
Peru. Now based in Harlem, he has defined himself and his music with
controversy, attitude and brutally unrestricted lyrics.
• K.Thor
Jensen: Art Without A Roof
K.Thor Jensen is a twenty-seven year old New York City-based self-publishing,
satirical cartoonist and illustrator who lived and created his art on
the city’s streets for over a year.
• Pavement
Pavement combines original poetry with full-page color photography showcasing
street artists and performers from around the world including: graffiti
artists, muralists, sidewalk artists, subway and street musicians.
• Play
It Loud:The LouderARTS Project
The LouderARTS Project is a not-for-profit arts collective of poets,
performers and artists committed to developing new and accessible spaces
for artists to create, critique, present and teach poetry.
• The
Rise and Fall of The Rock Girl Bands
From The Bangles to The Spice Girls: The Rise and Fall of The Rock Girl
Bands takes an intimate look at some of the most popular girl bands
who vanished into obscurity and why.
• Rooftop
Sideshows: Posing for Chris O’Brien
Inspired by New York City and its inhabitants, Chris O’Brien’s
urban rooftop photography has often taken a surreal and occasionally
lyrical approach to representing his subjects and models.
• The
School of Visual Arts
Beginning as a trade school with three instructors and thirty-five students
over fifty years ago, the School of Visual Arts has grown into a dynamic,multi-disciplinary
institution with a faculty of more than eight hundred working professional
artists and a student body of over three thousand.
• Spottiswoode
and His Enemies
A dangerous combination of tuxedos, trumpets, hard rock, heart-breaking
ballads, English wit, and a six-foot drag queen have made Spottiswoode
and His Enemies even a greater list of enemies on the band lounge circuit.
• Kurt
Wenner
While still employed by NASA as an advanced scientific space illustrator,
Kurt Wenner sold his belongings, moved to Italy, and began to study
and experience first-hand the work of Renaissance masters. He has since
emerged as one of the world’s most respected and awe-inspiring
sidewalk artists.
